Public bug reported:

Running `update-manager -d` from terminal asks to run a partial upgrade
and fails at it with the message in a dialog box:

---
Can't install 'ubuntu-desktop'

It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug
using 'ubuntu-bug update-manager' in a terminal.
---

Then dumps this into a terminal:

On a related note, `apt-get install -f` proposes to remove "ubuntu-
desktop" which I'm afraid to do. I don't know what's happening here,
this "-f" flag always seemed too magical to me :-)
