I didn't include the backports repository, but I just tried the Ubuntu 11.10 Beta1 released yesterday with the latest packages and I got the same results (png in attached). Both of the problems (window previews for one window only out of several and the top bar covering the preview for the second icon in the launcher) are still there.
Window previews are very important for AWN and Windows 7 users, but it looks like they are not receiving attention in Unity. I like that the Alt+Tab now has them, but it's sad that the launcher is being left out.
