I thought this may have been fixed by some of the Radeon patches in linux 3.0.3, but it's not fixed in the latest daily builds that were re- based on 3.0.3..
There is the workaround of booting using the laptop's HDMI cable and then installing the Catalyst drivers, which does work. Unfortunately, it appears that the latest kernel has broken the wireless(and possibly other things), which works in Natty, and worked in previous daily builds of Oneiric/linux-3.0.
