I have been experiencing a similar problem. On Friday, Aug 18, I downloaded and
installed xfce and related applications using synaptic. To the best of my
knowledge, all of the packages came from the ubuntu "Dapper" repositories.
By default xubuntu desktop was set to "file/launcher icons". Unfortunately
xfdesktop simply flashed up with all the icons in my Desktop file, stayed for
about three seconds and then terminated with a Segmentation fault.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xfdesktop
(xfdesktop:19880): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
Using the fallback 'C' locale.
Segmentation fault
Request for debug info.
It pains me to say that I did not save the strace when I ran into this
problem, so If anyone else experiences this bug please run "strace
xfdesktop" from the command line, save the output as a text file, and
post it here. Once this is done you can follow the instructions below to
resolve the issue.
The only line I actually saved from the strace is the following:
"_llseek(9, 4096, [4096], SEEK_SET) = 0"
Troubleshooting Outline.
This bug does not occur when I set xfdesktop to "minimised application icons".
Realization: This bug is specific to the "file/launcher icons"
I renamed my Desktop folder and replaced it with an Empty directory (I
personally put blank files in the directory but you probably only need a blank
directory). After I did this I started up xfdesktop which worked fine. I then
took all files/folders from my backed up Desktop and placed them back into the
Desktop folder and Behold: all icons were shown.
Conclusion: This bug occurs when there are files in your Desktop folder when
starting xfce for the first time.
Solution:
1. Rename ~/Desktop folder and replace it with an Empty directory
2. To Start "xfdesktop" either type xfdesktop at the command prompt, or
1. Select Applications>"Run Program",
2. Enter xfdesktop
3. Select "Run"
3. Move all files/folders from your backed up Desktop and return them to the
~/Desktop folder.
4. If this does not work make sure that xfdesktop is configured to run at
startup by doing the following:
1. Select Applications>"Settings">"Desktop Settings"
2. Check the box next to "Allow Xfce to Manage the Desktop"
3. Close all applications.
4. Press the "Power" or Logout button but make sure "Save this session"
is checked before logging out
5. After you are completely logged out, log back in to Xfce. The
desktop should automatically load.
Tip: If you do not want every single subsequent session to be saved, make sure
you uncheck the box next to "Save this Session" the next time you activate the
Logout dialog.
Restoring the Right Click Desktop Menu.
Chances are that if your desktop is not working, neither is your right
click menu, as the right click desktop menu is not enabled/filled by
default. To Enable the right-click menu, do the following:
1.copy the default menu /etc/xdg/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml to
~/.config/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml
"cp /etc/xdg/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml ~/.config/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml"
Please report any problems you may encounter following these
instructions.
