@Robert: I don't see how this would be related to the PPA. This happened because update-manager is trying to report an upgrade error using the apport module, and subsequently went away when the error'ed out upgrade log was not the most recent any more.
Now, we don't know what the original upgrade bug was, that triggered this buggy reporting routine - that might actually have been related to a PPA or whatever.
