"Feisty is now stable and officially released. If you install or upgrade
to that version, the x-server will run fine." -- This is the version to
which I attempted the upgrade to via the package updater "Distribution
Upgrade" button.
Looks like a fix got reversed or incompletely included. Possibly my
search on Launchpad has picked up a similar bug on the pre-release version.
FYI I also reported a much more serious bug in the Breezy to Dapper
upgrade (again the "official" button on the package updater) where a
failure to verify there was enough space caused disk full at a point
where config files were being written. The Ubuntu developers asked for
me to send log files and were, of course, VERY red faced when I pointed
out buffers cannot flush when the disk is full.
Clearly, I'm not a novice. I built my first computer in 1962 and have
what is likely the longest continually "in print" computer book still
available since Feb 1979. But I'm aware there are always things to
learn. And as a professor of management, I know how difficult it is to
keep bugs that have been "fixed" from creeping back into complex
systems. And those bugs discourage novices and make it much, much more
difficult to persuade decision makers to not just pay money to Microsoft
or Apple. Our Canadian agency responsible for telecommunications
violates our own laws by requiring submissions about telecom regulation
to be submitted in Word. Sigh.
I upgraded because one of our OCLUG members was saying everyone should
be upgrading because there were so many good new things in Feisty. I'm
empirical enough to not believe release announcements until I've tried
them, because folk ask me to comment and I like to speak from my own
experience. In this case, it's a minor glitch for me, but even
relatively experienced, but non-expert, users would be in trouble. I
figured, correctly, there would be fixes on the forums, though it is
work to sort through the chatter. So I donated an hour of my time (you
can guess that is worth about the same as a copy of Vista Pro) to the cause.
