I experienced this problem in Natty when trying to uninstall nvidia- common. I solved it in Synaptic by marking nvidia-common for uninstall as well as marking ubuntu-desktop for reinstall. This seemed to work; I got rid of nvidia-common and still have ubuntu-desktop.
