That Gtk-WARNING **: GtkImage message shouldn't be breaking anything, I
don't think it's the cause for nm-applet not appearing.

If it's an issue in dbus or glib that causes nm-applet to be unable to
speak to NM (which could explain it not appearing), there should be
other messages in .xsessions-errors and nm-applet's output if run from
the command line, and using nmcli to select connections to activate
probably also wouldn't work.
