David-Sarah Hopwood, regarding Unity/GNOME 3, this issue is well pass the proposed removal stage as per above mentioned comment from Mark Shuttleworth. While there is a large and growing portion of the Linux community who dislike both and want GNOME 2.x support to continue (see Linus Torvald's comments about GNOME 3 https://plus.google.com/106327083461132854143/posts/SbnL3KaVRtM ), this has been disregarded. Personally, I'm just going to switch to XFCE/LXDE/KDE. These options retain the preferences and usability found in GNOME 2.x and one does not have to complain to the Unity/GNOME developers who are going in a direction that is just not functional for myself and others.
