The upgrade was mentioned by apport, just find it odd but I always do fresh installs... and I'm Portuguese.
I'm not sure how to debug this, as it might be xawtv fault or a alsa bug. Can you attach an strace log[1] as it should help who has the expertise to triage this kind of bug, if its xawtv fault. Note that if you have to Ctrl-C to stop strace after closing xawtv please mention it (that means the program is still running).
