I experience exactly the same symptoms here (extremely slow typing
speed, Dolphin very slow...), though it does not seem to be restricted
to okular. It periodically happens when several of the following
applications are running (this is my typical working environment):
Azureus/Vuze, Dolphin, Dropbox, Firefox (especially with flash or java
applets and/or multiple tabs), Kile, Kontact, Okular, Skype. It also
happens with Nepomuk switched off.

My machine:
Dell XPS M1330 laptop
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz
4 GB RAM
GeForce 8400M GS with proprietary NVIDIA drivers
OS: openSuSE 11.4 (sorry, I didn't want to file a new bug there, in order to
avoid duplication)
KDE 4.6

I suspect the problem to have something to do with the NVIDIA drivers,
because I tried the nouveau drivers recently and the problem disappeared
there. However, because of the GPU overheating with the nouveau drivers
I had to switch back to the NVIDIA drivers. It would be interesting to
know whether the original poster uses the NVIDIA drivers as well.

I'm sorry not being able to provide more details as for now, I'd be
happy to receive testing instructions. However, I cannot retry the
nouveau drivers because of the heat problem mentioned above.
