Removing old linux images etc freed up sufficient disk space for
initramfs-tools to be re-installed with Synaptic. Problem caused by
insufficient disk space on /boot partition during upgrade. This in turn was
caused by allowing the number of available linux images to build up during
updates.
It would be useful if a disk space check were performed prior to upgrade.
