Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

Executive summary:

The Edgy and Feisty kernels refuse to work on a ThinkPad 600x.
The older Dapper kernel works fine as a workaround for me.

Details:

Both the Edgy and the Feisty kernels hang midway through the
bootstrapping process. The Dapper kernel which was originally used on
this computer continues to work, and the system was reconfigured to boot
into this old kernel by default for now.

This is on an IBM ThinkPad 600x, running a fairly minimal Ubuntu setup,
originally from a Dapper CD install, no LVM or other funky new-fangled
stuff. It had to be upgraded all the way to Feisty in order to get
hostapd to work with the madwifi driver. The system also runs sshd and
thttpd, but other than that, it's a basic Ubuntu workstation install.
(I did not have access to the server install CD when originally setting
this up, otherwise I would have preferred that.)

The system is deployed as the household WiFi access point at a remote
location, meaning I can get log files etc over SSH but unfortunately
cannot easily play around with various boot parameters etc. It's
running comfortably on the old kernel anyway; I'm reporting this mainly
for visibility in case others are running into the same problem on new
installations, where falling back to the Dapper kernel is not an obvious
option.

The boot messages up through "FDC is a National" appear as normal, but
then the system appears to hang. In the successful boot sequence, this
message is followed by a log message related to a driver for the
touchpad.

I tried from memory to recall various noapm, noacpi etc options
(probably some of them incorrectly -- it would be helpful if a reference
were visible in the grub edit screen!) but I could not quickly come up
with any workaround using this tactic, and didn't pursue it further once
I realized that using the old kernel was a good enough solution for my
requirements.

uname -a with the working kernel:

Linux back 2.6.15-26-386 #1 PREEMPT Fri Sep 8 19:55:17 UTC 2006 i686
GNU/Linux

Looking at bug #52752 (2-minute hang on ThinkPad 60T in ATA driver?) I
am not certain I had the patience to wait for two full minutes before
deciding it was not booting, although this otherwise seems unrelated.
