Right flexter. I'm running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn just now.
I don't know if the installation of grub in the bootsector of the partition of
Feisty really helped to get the system boot.
I'ii explain what I did, since the firts installation attemp of Feisty:
My fdisk output:

-----------------------
I've XOSL installed as primary boot manager (they use MBR and /dev/hda3 (FAT
partition). More about Xosl on http://www.ranish.com/part/xosl.htm. I use XOSL
for several years.
Windows 98 was installed on /dev/hda1, before the problems with Feisty.
Windows XP is installed on the 3. partition.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What I did:
1) 20 April -> First attempt to install Feisty
- backup with "partimage" of /dev/hda8
- I tried Ubuntu Feisty Fawn alternate CD - They don't boot my system.
- Then i've downloaded the Ubuntu Feisty fawn desktop cd. My system has booted
and the installation was OK, Grub was entirely loaded in the bootsector of
/dev/hda8.
By rebooting the system and choosing to boot Ubuntu Feisty, I got the errors as
in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/107976/comments/3,
- I have restaured the Partimage Backup of /dev/hda8 and got my Ubuntu Edgy
back.
2) 25 to 27 April
- Installation of Ubuntu Feisty on /dev/hda1.
I've forgot to choose the advanced options during the installation and so the
grub was loade to MBR.
The installation process was OK, but I got the same errors when booting from
/dev/hda1
So i've restaures my MBR with Xosl and forgoted Feisty.
3) 28 to 29 April
I would try the hacks from
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2525534#post2525534, and so I
reinstalled Feisty again on /dev/hda. This time, I selected the advanced
options during the installation and so Grub was loaded entirely on bootsector
of /dev/hda1. The istallation process was ok and on rebooting, surprise! The
system booted from /dev/hda1.
They complained about some errors of FAT partitions, but at the end the system
works perfectly.
Windows XP and other Linux distributions installed are also working.
The fact: Feisty installed on the first primary partition and with grub
loaded entirely in bootsector of the same partition are working for me.
Is Windows XP installed in your first primary partition? You can make a backup
with Norton Ghost.
If you need assistance with this process, including relocation of the Windows
partition and partimage backups, please send me private email (you can find my
email address in my profile by launchpad). And you can write in spanish, I
understand it perfectly
