I wonder if this might be related to not rebooting after installing a
VPN plugin?
Also, if those are carried over from a previous install (e.g. you kept
your /home across a reinstall), then please make sure you install the
VPN plugin required for this type of connection; your options are within
network-manager-vpnc, network-manager-pptp, network-manager-openvpn.
