Public bug reported: Some time ago in oneiric, indicator-session started to invoke aptd during startup. aptd is a veeery heavy process, written in python (lots of CPU) and querying the whole apt database (lots of CPU and IO). Supposedly this is used to check whether you have up to date packages.
Compare: stock oneiric: http://people.canonical.com/~pitti/bootcharts/daniel-oneiric-20110914.png -> 37 s with session indicator disabled: http://people.canonical.com/~pitti/bootcharts/daniel-oneiric-20110914-disable-indicator-session.png -> 24 s Please observe the large blue "aptd" blob on the first chart. I recommend to either defer the check for a minute or so, or drop that menu item entirely, as update-notifier already pops up when there are updates available, and the status is also displayed in the control- center and update-manager.
