This ended up being a configuration issue on my wireless access point.
For what its worth it is running DD-WRT v24-sp1 (07/27/08) mini and I
had checked "Authentication type: Shared Key".  Changing this to Auto
ended up allowing my system to connect.  I really don't believe I'd
changed this setting so I'd guess it was a regression from Natty but
can't be certain as everything is running Oneiric now.
