It isn't "what we've come to expect of an online store experience".
Previous versions of USC didn't have it, the Android Market doesn't have
it (it has categories on category screens, but not application screens),
the Mac App Store doesn't have it.

How it would detract from the experience is obvious: it would take up a
large chunk of screen width. That may not look important while
categories and subcategories still use list views, but it will once they
switch to a tile view.
