After recent update in 11.10 beta, I lost all sound output. 
Description:    Ubuntu oneiric (development branch)
Release:        11.10

Sound card is recognized and seeems to be working fine.  But trying to
get sound output produces no sound at all. It happend during the last 7
days.

I notice my sound is always muted when I do a fresh restart. Might be
something here.
