I have the same problem with CD/DVD Creator not recognizing a blank CD-R in the burner.
FWIW, My configuration has two similarities to UbuntuKevin's... 1) My CD burner is also a PLEXTOR PX-W8432T 2) I also have a second device that can read CDs... a TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1502.
