** Description changed: Two different WLAN-N USB sticks, which both use module ar9170usb and do connect to the router with 300 MBit/s, actually transfer data 5-10 times SLOWER than a reference WLAN-G device at 54 MBit/s, when used under kernel 2.6.38. Kernel 2.6.32 only supports the 54Mbit/s mode with these two sticks, but then they are only 5-10% slower than the reference, i.e. still MUCH faster in this slow mode than in the fast N mode under kernel 2.6.38. The two sticks are a) TP-stick : TP-Link TL-WN821N (USB-ID: 0cf3:1002) b) Fritz-stick : Fritz!Wlan Stick N (USB-ID: 057c:8401) They are tested under Lucid 10.04.2 on an Acer Aspire One 110L netbook; the reference is its internal WLAN module "Atheros AR5001", which uses module ath5k. The router is a FritzBox 7270, sitting in unobstructed line-of-sight at a distance of some 3m to the netbook. A second computer is connected via ethernet to the router, and holds a 500MB file with random data. I measured transfer rate by copying the file from the 2nd computer to the netbook. Only one of the three WLAN devices was active at any moment. -- Kernel 2.6.38-5 The router shows the sticks connected at 300MBits/s, the reference at 54 MBits/s Transfer rates in MBit/s : reference: 25, TP-stick and Fritz-stick: 5 (from as low as 0.1, to brief max of 10, connection breaking up multiple times) -- Kernel 2.6.32-30 The router shows all devices connecting at 54 MBit/s Transfer rates in MBit/s : reference: 25, TP-stick and Fritz-stick: 23-24 (typicall 5-10% slower than reference) all connections stable during testing + --- + AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23. + AplayDevices: + **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** + card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC268 Analog [ALC268 Analog] + Subdevices: 1/1 + Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 + Architecture: i386 + ArecordDevices: + **** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices **** + card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC268 Analog [ALC268 Analog] + Subdevices: 1/1 + Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 + AudioDevicesInUse: + USER PID ACCESS COMMAND + /dev/snd/controlC0: ullix 1471 F.... pulseaudio + CRDA: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory + Card0.Amixer.info: + Card hw:0 'Intel'/'HDA Intel at 0x78540000 irq 45' + Mixer name : 'Realtek ALC268' + Components : 'HDA:10ec0268,1025015b,00100101' + Controls : 8 + Simple ctrls : 5 + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 + InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release i386 (20100429) + MachineType: Acer AOA110 + Package: linux (not installed) + ProcCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-11-generic root=UUID=be4bd740-4bcb-43fc-b04f-a008f312de6e ro splash vga=789 quiet elevator=noop quiet splash enable_mtrr_cleanup + ProcEnviron: + LANGUAGE=en_US:en + LANG=en_US.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-11.50~lucid1-generic 2.6.38.8 + Regression: No + RelatedPackageVersions: linux-firmware 1.34.12 + Reproducible: Yes + Tags: lucid networking needs-upstream-testing + Uname: Linux 2.6.38-11-generic i686 + UserGroups: adm admin cdrom dialout lpadmin mythtv plugdev sambashare + dmi.bios.date: 10/06/2008 + dmi.bios.vendor: Acer + dmi.bios.version: v0.3310 + dmi.board.asset.tag: Base Board Asset Tag + dmi.board.vendor: Acer + dmi.board.version: Base Board Version + dmi.chassis.type: 1 + dmi.chassis.vendor: Chassis Manufacturer + dmi.chassis.version: Chassis Version + dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnAcer:bvrv0.3310:bd10/06/2008:svnAcer:pnAOA110:pvr1:rvnAcer:rn:rvrBaseBoardVersion:cvnChassisManufacturer:ct1:cvrChassisVersion: + dmi.product.name: AOA110 + dmi.product.version: 1 + dmi.sys.vendor: Acer ** Attachment added: "AlsaDevices.txt" https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/730229/+attachment/2420798/+files/AlsaDevices.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/730229 Title: Very poor performance of wlan-N adapter under kernel 2.6.38 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/730229/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
