I have been experiencing the same problem since I upgraded to oneiric.
However, I did notice, that it works on a 'vanilla' user account (like
on a guest session). When I created a new account called 'testing', the
software centre succeeded in opening. The same successful results
occured in a guest session.
It would seem that the crash only affects pre-existing accounts on the
system, that existed before the upgrade to oneiric.
