  Binary package hint: network-manager

After doing a system restart the network manager hangs if plugged into wired
network.
If connected to wireless network, network manager connects, but will not
recognised wired network when the wired network is plugged in, even if
unplugged and waiting for a period of time before plugging in again.

After much research found that a stop of the service , clear service
status, and service restart will then allow wired network to connect,
and also allows swap between wired and wireless networks and connection
  to VPN.

The following statements get the network manager to work again.

  service network-manager stop
  rm /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state
  service network-manager start
