The "bug" is gone. As I mentioned in post #9, my system was still using grub instead of grub2. My suspicion is that the upgrade from one to the other should have been automatic, but it never happened. No idea why, but it's no longer my problem. Also, on that particular computer I've had to reinstall Ubuntu completely, for non-Ubuntu reasons. So I doubt that I can help in any way now.
