I tried sharing a single GnomeRRScreen instance between plugins, and it shaves a fair bit of time off (it certainly gets rid of the 1 second from the power/color plugins. This bootchart seems to suggest it saves even more though, although I think that's more likely to be some anomaly, like not having my external screen attached)
