Public bug reported:

vlc and mplayer fail to install because they can't satisfy the libx264
dependency.  eg:

$ sudo aptitude install mplayer
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libavcodec52{a} libavformat52{a} libavutil50{a} libbluray0{a} liblzo2-2{a}
libmp3lame0{a} libpostproc51{a} libswscale0{a} libva1{a} libxvidcore4{a}
  mplayer{b}
0 packages upgraded, 11 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.
Need to get 3,590 kB/9,602 kB of archives. After unpacking 19.3 MB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  mplayer: Depends: libx264-98 which is a virtual package.

It seems that libx264-98 isn't being offered, but it was obviously used
to build vlc and mplayer...

$ aptitude search libx264
p   libx264-dev                                                           -
development files for libx264

** Affects: x264 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
