i have read other bugs about dmix not being enabled by default however
from my understanding, this has since been fixed. However, I continue to
have problems hearing sounds from different apps. My main problem is
having mpd playing and continuing to hear other sounds from my desktop
(mainly im). As long as everything is using esd its fine, but if
something just tries to use alsa, then the problems start showing up
