It looks like something is calling 'plymouth quit' before plymouth-
splash ever has a chance to start.  Is the video slow to initialize on
this system, or is the disk really fast?

You could try adding a 'sleep' to the top of the script in
/etc/init/lightdm.conf; if that improves things, then this race seems
the likely explanation.
