I tried running vlc -A dummy and vlc --noaudio but the system would still lock up on both occasions. I notice that the cpu usage would often increase when the system would lock up. Also, with the noaudio option it took longer for the system to lock up. I have attached the kern.log file. If this is not the right file, let me know where I can find the right one. I have also tried running vlc -v from terminal when playing the file. I have attached a text file with the output which I copied from terminal. Hope this helps.
