Public bug reported:

This may be a duplicate of bug #683775. In this case, there has been a
regression in the Natty distribution. But this may be a new bug, as bug
#683775 was reported here in late 2010, and apparently fixed.

After I migrated from Maverick to Natty last May (2011) , I experienced
some difficulties at boot time. For example, I installed a second Natty
on my hard drive, but never have I been able to boot it (at the time, I
used to try only a few times).I concluded that I could not have two
Natties on the same disk, without understanding why.

Since two or three months, the situation has turned highly unbearable.
As I did know what was wrong, I installed Natty over and over again,
with no significant result, until I found bug #683775. I applied the
modification suggested by Andy, with no results.
