Okay, that starts to make sense; I wondered if it might be something
like that.

Would you mind booting to a LiveCD and see if the hang reproduces?

What I'm thinking is that it's not unusual for random config files,
settings, etc. to accumulate over time.  In theory Ubuntu should work
fine swapped between hardware, but given that you say you're seeing
other bugs too I have to wonder if you've just got some cruft built up.
So testing a LiveCD should avoid all of that.

Fwiw, while in theory a Ubuntu installation should transfer fine from
computer to computer, with my own hardware I don't trust that and always
do fresh reinstalls (after backing up all my personal files).
