The initial bug reporter has a HP LaserJet 4 Plus (4+), according to
www.linuxprinting.org this is both a Postscript and PCL5e printer and
the Postscript driver is the recommended driver. Since I don't have this
printer model I can't judge if this information is correct.

The HP LaserJet 4L has recommended driver ljet4 since 20050106:

Super_6e.xml, printer/Okidata-OL410e.xml, printer/Canon-LBP-430.xml,
printer/HP-LaserJet_5L.xml, printer/HP-LaserJet_6L.xml, printer/HP-
LaserJet_5P.xml, printer/HP-LaserJet_3P_w_PCL5.xml: Changed recommended
driver from HPIJS to "ljet4". These printers do only 300 dpi or work
better with 300 dpi than with 600 dpi and with 300 dpi "ljet4" gives the
better output quality.

** Changed in: gnome-cups-manager (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: gnome-cups-manager => foomatic-filters-ppds
