Ubuntu 11.10 may make things worse.

1) I've been using a Kamal's modified kernel to prevent the screen from
burning my eyes. (Linux 2.6.38-11-generic
#50+kamal3~mjgbacklight5-Ubuntu SMP Tue ). Thank you Kamal!

2) I've been using 'Classic Mode' instead of Unity because menus and
window decorations disappear on Unity.

I've read that Ubuntu 11.10 may remove the option of 'Classic Mode' and
force people to use Unity whether they want to or not.

This would leave me with an unuseable computer. The last time Ubuntu
worked correctly on my Intel i5 Arrandale computer (with backlight
adjustment and visible menus) was 10.10 and it may be wise to go back to
that release.
