With the i386 versions of sni-qt and libdbusmenu-qt2 I almost have a
working indicator. The indicator is there when skype is launched, but
[visually] goes away as soon as I'm logged in. If I put my mouse where
the indicator was, I can get to skype's indicator menu and things - just
can't see it.

$ dpkg -l skype:i386 libdbusmenu-qt2 libdbusmenu-qt2:i386 sni-qt sni-qt:i386
ii  libdbusmenu-qt2                             0.9.0-0ubuntu2
ii  libdbusmenu-qt2:i386                        0.9.0-0ubuntu2
