This is the biggest problem I'm facing with ubuntu 10.04 and my Acer Aspire 5253-BZ684. At this point I'd just be happy to have a way of muting the speakers while the headphones stayed on.. . Problems been here for most of the year, I can't believe someone hasn't figured this out by now. My laptop is identical to the one mentioned in the OP
