Hubris, the return to login prompt must be, as mentioned by Warren Butler , because of the default to not allow multiple logins. If you are using GNOME you can go to System -> Administration -> Login Windows and then unselect Disable multiple logins for single user in the General Tab. The -extension XFIXES solution by Roberto along with fonts path seems to have fixed my problem. Many thanks.
