Hi, I was able to figure out how to get my brother mfc685cw scanner to work
with Ubuntu !
I also added this solution to another reported bug (viola65submitted #696399
Simple Scan error message - can't find scanner)

This is not a bug.... Ubuntu does not have the Brother Scanner Drivers,
they need to be downloaded and set-up manually. I found the following
solution for me by using the Ubuntu Software Center Help (scanning) and
going to the Brother Solution Center.

1) check for scan drivers:
Press Alt+F2, type “gksudo gedit /etc/sane.d/dll.conf”
Check for your scanner driver. (brother, brother2, brother3)
If there is a # in front of the scanner name, remove it.
Try the scanner again

2) If the scanner name is not in the list, the scanner drive needs to be
installed.
Go to the Brother Solution Center:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1b.html
Follow the instructions for the Debian package (dpkg) – look at the examples to
help you.
Go to the Scanner Driver Download page, find your model (ex. DCP-195c = Brscan3
model)
Click on the “Install Instruction : scanner driver”
Click on the scan driver you need for your scanner - USB or Network (wireless)
connection.
Follow the instructions. GOOD LUCK !
