piwacet, I've done quite a few test runs doing exactly as you say, and never been dropped to initramfs. Also I've never had the screen go black on me. I have been testing with KVM though, not virtualbox. Can you make sure that the kernel commandline has no "quiet" argument, and also has 'nomodeset' so we get a text bootup?
