By clicking "Settings ..." I always get hp-systray crashing, making the
settings panel unreachable.

The problem is cause by overlay scrollbar (bug 805303). Closing hp-
systray by clicking "Quit" in the menu and restarting it in a terminal
window with

LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 hp-systray

makes it working and the "Settings" window gets reachable.

Note: My desktop is GNOME Unity. If you want to test this, make sure
hplip-gui is installed.
