Public bug reported:

In natty, when a system was not connected to mains power, the indicator would
show a battery.
If the system was connected to mains power, the icon would show a battery with
a zig-zag / lightning flash across it.

With oneiric I only ever get a battery indicator displayed. Plugging and
removing the AC power makes no difference. acpitool shows that I am
definitely connected to the mains:

$ acpitool
  Battery #1     : charged, 97.91%
  AC adapter     : on-line
  Thermal info   : <not available>
