Ok, maybe I was a bit too fast. I was now able to solve the problem by
deleting ~/.texmf-var. The font information was re-built and Latin
Modern worked fine afterwards. So it's not a very serious bug, but
somewhat irritating. I don't know what caused that error. Is it possible
to prevent such conflicts in the future? I have Feisty installed over
Dapper, so it's a clean Feisty install, but the config files were from
Dapper.
