Ok, maybe I was a bit too fast. I was now able to solve the problem by deleting ~/.texmf-var. The font information was re-built and Latin Modern worked fine afterwards. So it's not a very serious bug, but somewhat irritating. I don't know what caused that error. Is it possible to prevent such conflicts in the future? I have Feisty installed over Dapper, so it's a clean Feisty install, but the config files were from Dapper.
