I did another test to see if your patch eliminates the "inital" g-s-d crash that happened when I first logged into a fresh Oneriric installation. What I have done was chrooting into a fresh installation (= that was never booted before) and installing the patched gnome- settings-daemon package (that I had prepared before). Then I booted the fresh system the first time, and... your patch seems to help, no g-s-d crash anymore :-)
