I have this issue as well with nm-applet. Connections set to connect automatically work, the icon displays correctly (wireless vs wired) however there is no interface information (wireless networks & disconnect as well as wired interfaces and disconnect).
All I see across a few reboots is: Enable Networking (checked) Enable Wireless (checked) Connection Information (greyed out) Edit Connections...
