I'm marking my bug invalid because it's more an issue of PEBKAK instead.
What happened was that during the upgrade, I got a prompt about changing
some gnome config file. I didn't realize that this file controlled all
my custom settings, so I told apt to use the packaged version rather
than retain my version.
THIS is what caused the problem. I learned later that had I kept my
vesion of that file, my custom launchers would have remained.
The only real issue there is that there was some confusion there about
what exactly that file controlled.
