This is not a bug. The password does not show up to avoid people looking
over your shoulder and seeing your password! It is invisible for your
security. Just type it in like it was there.

If it says "authentication failed" it means you typed the wrong
password. Try again with the correct password. Also, on Ubuntu the super
user is disabled by default, so you can't use su. Instead use sudo su
and enter your own password (not the superuser password).
