Doesn't look like I have any software left that depends on these
libraries... so maybe it was needed by something in the past but not
currently . . .

In any case that appears to have fixed the problem.  The dist-upgrade has 
gotten further along in the GUI, with the typical prompt prior to upgrade.  You 
guys are amazingly fast with problem analysis.  :D  (I checked out bug 853688 
and saw that a fix was committed about 2 hours ago.  Does that mean that this 
shouldn't affect systems when the RC comes out tomorrow?)
