Sounds like a kernel issue, the actual error message is:

codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000]

And googling it shows that the error message appears around the place
(different kernels, different distro's, different programs cause it)
it's just difficult to pinpoint exactly where it's coming from.
