After reading comment #6, I want to provide more details:

1) After upgrading to natty, I noticed that the camera was sometimes not
recognized any more. It got worse until the camera was not recognized at
all any more.

2) Since the camera had been continuously working under lucid (and b/c I
rarely had hardware problems in the past), I first thought that this had
to be something related to the version of the OS and first blamed natty.
(Which is why I posted here in the first place.)

3) Then, I decided to study this further and booted into lucid from a
USB stick and found that the camera was not working as well, at which
point I started to consider a hardware problem

4) I started pressing against my laptop lid in areas surrounding the
camera, and I bent the lid there. In some cases, I would end up in a
configuration in which the camera was recognized. So I concluded that
this was likely some problem of an intermittent/broken electrical
contact.

5) Next day, I took the laptop lid apart. A piece of sheet metal holding
the camera was deformed. This must have been from a previous accident
which was professionally (but obviously not perfectly) repaired. I tried
to bend the metal in place. I also took the camera out and played with
its connection cable a bit at the connector. While the system was
disassembled I booted up and found that the camera was recognized. I re-
assembled the system, and ever since then, the camera is always
recognized and working perfectly.

6) My guess would be that either the metal plate was shorting a contact
on the camera board, or the electrical connection at the connector was
bad, which got fixed just by playing around with it.
