Thanks you for the tip, I had read "check CD for defects" before but never knew
how to do so.
As it (embarrassingly) turns out: It was a bad disk.
I had burned three different copies and they all did the same thing so I
though it couldn't be the problem, but I borrowed someone else's 10.04
disk and it worked fine.
Sorry for the... incompetency. I hope that the next bug I report is more
interesting! :)
