Bugs marked rejected do not show up on people's default "subscribed bugs" list. So I take the liberty of reopening, and I reiterate my request - the whole of KDE should be included in the Kubuntu DVD. There is still 600 MB space.
The current policy is apparently that only what is there in the main component goes into the supported seed and hence is included in the DVD. This is understandable, since Kubuntu does not support anything from Universe, and hence that cannot be included into the "Supported" seed. But just think - all KDE packages -- at least those that are released by the KDE project (which includes sub-projects like KOffice) -- must be supported by Kubuntu, and hence must be included in the main component (and hence take place in the supported seed and hence in the DVD). http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/components says that "We believe that the software in main includes everything most people will need for a fully functional desktop or internet server." The KDE people also "include everything most people will need for a fully functional desktop". You have omitted many packages from their output. That means you think the KDE people have thrown in something unnecessary. For example, KGpg is not included in the main component. Do you think KGpg is unnecessary? For the average non-techie desktop user, every function they may need should be available from the GUI. Encryption and identity protection are important things that all users need. These are functions of gpg and hence of KGpg. Hence KGpg is obviously necessary for "a fully functional desktop". But you do not provide KGpg. How can you consider the main component to be complete without KGpg? In the current situation, I am given to know that the whole of main goes into the supported seed. I hope I was told wrong. The main *component* can be bigger than what a single DVD can hold, since the supported seed is there to take care of that (containment within a DVD). The main component will thus include non desktop-specific packages like GCC, and all desktop packages like KDE. Out of them, each *ubuntu variant can take the desktop-agnostic stuff and the stuff specific to their desktop for their own supported seeds. The supported seeds can also take other-desktop packages which are very popular but whose function is not equalled (or provided at all) by a desktop-native package. For example, Krita is not as functional as GIMP, so GIMP can go into the Kubuntu supported seed, despite not being a KDE application. (Evolution is more than matched by Kontact, so it is not needed in a Kubuntu DVD - but the current Kubuntu DVD has it.) So in summary, the contents of the main component and the main-supported relationship should be rethought out as outlined above and accordingly implemented. (P.S: My KDE-specific references can/must be extended to other desktop environments too.) ** Changed in: Ubuntu Status: Rejected => Unconfirmed -- The whole of KDE should be included in the Kubuntu DVD https://launchpad.net/bugs/56971 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
